Mixture of winter cold snarls travel (CNN)

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN)--temperatures have slowly warming Thursday in the South, where freezing rain icy roads with ice, but a sprawling winter storm system remained in place in the upper Plains States.

The National Weather Service issued and advice for the States of more than a dozen of winter storm warnings. The largest part of the system is on the verge of hitting the Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia, but several inches of snow are planned for portions of Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and North Carolina and Minnesota and Dakota. Advice weather winter stretched in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In Kentucky, up to a quarter inch of ice may accumulate on the roads, the weather service warned, in addition to snow fell earlier. Three to six inches of snow was planned for Eastern Virginia.

Two people died in a shipwreck on a bridge of ice in Alabama on Wednesday, said officials, and another died in a car accident in Mississippi.
