If you're in the area of South Coast Plaza on Saturday evening, be sure to stop by the Bank of surfing Heritage Foundation in the Mall for an art show and book signing of artist surf Robb Havassy.
The Newport surfer - who created the book Surf Story - there will be 5 to 9 p.m. at the exhibition opening reception. The book is the largest compilation of stories of surfing and art never captured in a book. In its 440 pages, there are pieces of surfing and other artists who have created a capsule - watch surfing art and culture surf as it exists today. If you are looking to give a copy as a gift this holiday, this would be your chance.
There are stories of John Severson, founder of surfer magazine who opened the eyes of the world surf culture. There is a page by the famous surfers Rob Machado and a local surfer Mike Losness. There is the famous and the unknown offering a wide range of stories, some fear-based, some mockery - all about their relationship with water.
Read more about the unique history of Robb and how the book came after a battle with giant Hollister clothing.
The address is 333 Bear St. # 333, Southwest Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa. For more information, go to surfingheritage.org.
