Tenganan is the most famous village Bali Aga (original BALINESE) and is located in the vicinity of Candi Dasa in East Bali. Villagers keep a strict Cosmology and social organization. Villagers should live in the village and marry of in. There are portions of Tenganan, outside of the village itself, where the villagers who were married outside of the village can live and complete strangers have yet another part.
Tenganan produces fine basketry and double weave ikat, called geringsing, the only place is located in South-East Asia and one of only 3 in the world. Tenganan visitors can walk around in the village of long rectangular, which is presented in the bleachers, stairs of broad between Pierre. Tenganan is closed to foreigners after dark of the night. The puseh pura (temple of origin), which is in honour of the village, founders located outside village walls to the North. One end of the village, just in the entrance is ball agung, the long rectangular ball where village Council meeting.
Legend has that, in the 14th century, King Bedauli, the leader of Bali, has lost his favorite horse and offered a reward to anyone who could find. Finally, the horse was found dead near Tenganan and local people asked to give the land as a reward. The King sent his representative to determine the limit of the Earth to give and told him to include all the land where he could feel the dead horse. Accompanied by local village chief could not discover how he could feel the horse everywhere he went, possibly drawing broad limits. Apparently, the head of the village had a piece of meat to clothes horse. The descendants of the head now work like Kuta changers.
The thing that Tenganan has is a special tradition of weaving and unique cultural history. There is only 600 families in Tenganan and its inhabitants, it is forbidden to marry outside the village. If they do, they are banished from the village ever. Local Tenganan I was once that there is indeed of the three parts of the village, the western part, which is the appropriate part, is exiled locals Northeastern and southeastern, inhabited by people from outside, Javanese and other BALINESE.
Tenganan is one of only 3 places in the world, the other being the India and Japan, where a double ikat is woven. In a double ikat (cloth), frame (longitudinal) and threads (lateral) armor are linked separately prior to being dyed, creating a template complex. A single ikat takes 5 years to make and is used in religious ceremonies.
It was a day 3 festival held once per year in the village called UDABA SAMBAH and usually mid-year for the months of June/Juli. When you visit Tenganan try and get there early in the morning to avoid the tourist bus that it much like a circus. Moments are before 10 a.m. and after 4 pm. The village is closed to foreigners and visitors after the dark of the night. Note also that you will be charged a small parking lot outside costs.
